Rachel Pearce’s abstract work embodies influences from the past, notably
Abstract Expressionism, with a contemporary sensibility which generates impact
and relevance today and is causing excitement at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry,
where a number of the Cardiff graduate’s paintings – earlier work and ongoing
commissions – are on permanent display. Although painstakingly created, often
on unprimed canvas and using staining and layering techniques, her paintings
have a spontaneous, energetic quality; indeed, part of their appeal is that
they robustly withstand repeated viewings. Colourful, vibrant, joyous, they
are nevertheless grounded in research and the modern world, presenting a
challenge rather than ‘chocolate box’ prettiness.
